This is Dakota Fanning and Jennifer Hudson in the movie The Secret Life of Bees. They play Rosaleen and Lily.

Chapter 3

No new Characters.

Lily and Rosaleen wake up by the riverbed. They get up and begin walking and realize that they are hungry. They also realize that it is Sunday, so they will be lucky to find anything open.
Luckily, they find a church that is having a cookout. Lily goes and buys some food for them there.
After Lily buys the food, she goes into the store to pick up food for the next day. Except she finds out that she cannot buy it because it is Sunday. While in the store, she spots honey with a colored virgin Mary on the front. Just like the one on the wooden plate of her mother's. She asks the clerk where it came from. He told her it was from a colored lady named August Boatwright. She makes the honey. August has bee farms all over the county.
Rosaleen and Lily begin to make their way to August's house.

Chapter 2

Characters:
Mr. Gaston - Policeman who arrested Rosaleen and Lily

Mr. Gaston drives Rosaleen and Lily to jail. He puts them in a cell and calls T-Ray.
T-Ray comes and picks Lily up and angrily takes her home. They get into a fight and he says her mother left long before the day she died. She just came back that day to get her clothes.
This makes Lily very angry. She decides to leave. She packs her stuff, leaves a note for T-Ray that says, "Don't even try to look for me."
Lily makes her way to the jail when her pastor picks her up and gives her a ride. When she gets to the jail she find out that 3 black men were beat Rosaleen up so she was taken to the hospital for stitches. She was not supposed to go to the hospital to see Rosaleen, but she went anyways.
Lily walks to the hospital and tries to find Rosaleen. She finds her right away, but she tricks the policeman guarding the door into leaving so she and Rosaleen can escape.
Rosaleen and Lily begin walking. They are going to Tiburon, South Carolina. Lily thinks that place has some connection with her mother. That was the place that was written on the back of her colored virgin Mary.
They catch a ride with a cantaloupe farmer. He drops them off 3 miles outside of Tiburon. They walk the rest of the way in.
Rosaleen and Lily find a river. They bathe in the river and stay under the bridge by the riverbed for the night.

Chapter 1

Characters:
Lily - Main Character, Narrator of the story, age 14.
Rosaleen - Lily's Black Stand-in Mother and Housekeeper, the only one who loves her.
T-Ray - Lily's Dad, He is semi-abusive, mostly by words, but sometimes physical.

The chapter starts off with Lily lying in her bed watching the bees as they come out of her walls. All of a sudden a swarm of bees comes above her bed. Lily runs to get T-Ray(her dad). But by the time they get back to her room, all the bees are gone. T-ray then yells at her for getting him up out of bed. Her dad is not nice, He is kind of abusive with his words and doesn't love her.
Next, she tells the story, how her mom died. That story was kind of unclear because Lily didn't quite remember it clearly. She was only 4 when she died. It seems that Lily's mom was shot by T-Ray. T-Ray says that Lily shot her.
Lily then decides to catch bees in a ar, so she can probe to T-Ray about the bees in her room.
Lily then goes into the attic and finds some of her mom's stuff in a stapled beag. In the bag was a picture of her mom, white gloves, and wooden colored Virgin Mary with Tiburon, South Carolina written on the back. She hides all her mom's stuff in a box buried in the peach orchard. She didn't dare put it in her room for she was scared T-Ray would come looking for it and destroy her and her room.
Lily went and sat out at the peach booth as she is required to do every day. She sat there all day but did not sell anything. She just daydreams about how T-Ray told her that she(Lily) killed her mom. She also wonders why T-Ray doesn't like her reading...
At dinner Lily mentions that her birthday is coming up. She tells T-Ray she wants a silver charm bracelet. He just grunts. He doesn't care that it is her birthday. For he doesn't even love his own daughter.
That night Lily goes out to look at her mom's stuff in the peach orchard. T-Ray follows her. He goes and grabs her, but does not find any of his wife's stuff. He believes Lily was out there meeting a boy, which she wasn't. T-Ray then makes her kneel on the grits for 1 hour. The next morning she has hundreds of little bruises all of her knees and legs.
Rosaleen and Lily decide to walk to town one day. As they get into town, some white men make racial comments at Rosaleen. As Rosaleen walks by them, she spits on their shoes. Then, they attack Rosaleen and cut her eye. The men call the police and Rosaleen and Lily are arrested.

The Secret Life of Bees Movie Trailer

The Secret Life of Bees

So...for English we have been assigned a long range assignment. When 2nd semester starts we are going to be watching movies about journalism. Between that we are going to be "leisure reading" and writing it in our blogs. How cool is that????? Because how many teachers give you assignments to write your own website??? I think it will be fun.
We only have very few requirement which I think is nice. We have to,
1) Read at least 1 book.
2) The book must be at least 200 pages.
3) Update your blog as often as possible.
4) Fill out worksheets now and then about the blogs and other blogs you read.
5) We have from Christmas until Spring Break to finish this assignment.
This seems pretty simple. The first book I have decided to read is The Secret Life of Bees written by Sue Monk Kidd.
"This book is set in South Carolina in 1964. It tells the story of Lily Owens, whose life has been shaped around the blurred memory of the afternoon her mother was killed. When Lily's fierce-hearted black "stand-in mother," Rosaleen, insults three of the deepest racists in town, Lily decides to spring them both free. They escaoe to Tiburon, South Carolina--a town that holds the secret to her mother's past. Taken in by an eccentric trio of black beekeeping sisters, Lily is introduced to their mesmerizing world of bees and honey, and the Black Madonna. This is the remarkable novel about divine female power, a story that women will share and pass on to their daughters for years to come."
This is the summary of the book from the back cover. It seems like a pretty good book to me. It is also becoming a movie. I will hopefully soon put up a trailer to the movie soon.
